Best Indian Films of all time

Best Indian Films of all time

Time recently published its list of 100 best films ever and 5 Indian movies made the grade - Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy, Guru Dutt's Pyaasa and Mani Ratnam's Nayakan.

Rediff has now started a month-long series of top 10 Indian movies from the perspective of Indian film-makers and critics. And they started with Subhash Ghai. My first reaction to Mr.Ghai's list was that of frustration.

I thought this was a list of India's best films. But all I see on his list are Hindi movies. Is Mr. Ghai just ignorant of movies in other languages or does he hate to give credit where it is due?

It is a real shame that one of India's leading film-makers didn't think it worthy to mention even a single South Indian movie. Hum Apke Hai Kaun makes the list but not Roja or Bombay or Nayakan or Beladingala Baalae or Shankarabaranam or Kshana Kshanam or Pushpakavimanam or Kaazhcha (the list goes on)... I agree it is about individual tastes and perspectives - but on this one, I think it is more than just that!

Open your mind to good cinema from other regions too Mr.Ghai.

Unrelated link: Rahman's composition for Roja made it to the top 10 best soundtracks ever. Here is a nice write-up on him.

I have no respect for Ghai, so don't care at all what he thinks.

And I repeat, Rehman is GOD.

He thinks his Taal is worthy of mention. If it wasn't for Rehman's music, I don't see that movie having any potential.

A load of crap, his list is. Not that I did not enjoy HAHK and KKHH. I loved them. But they are entertainers! Company, for one, is a great movie. So is The Legend of Bhagat Singh. Don't know much about the older ones, so can't comment.

I aint gonna act like a movie buff, but I dont find any problem with lookin at Ghai's selection. Its not as if hes the authority for anything or that being "him" gives the selection any more worth. Its his own damn choice. I would probably have 8 tamil movies in the top 10..so i have nothing to side with or complain abt others' choices.

You decide whats best for u.

Roja is an unsurmountable classic and I would consider it the best of any film of ARR in more ways than one.

But sad times got to mention only the hindi version. I think "Kaadhal Rojaave" and "Roja jaaneman" are miles apart.

And yeah, whats better than the "Punnaagai Mannan" soundtrack, composed by u know who at the age of 13 :)

'Encore' Ms.V - Rehamn is GOD!

Go Mani! GO Kamal!

jus read a recent interview in Ananda Vikatan where Mani says -'Kamal avlo periya nadigar, kalaiznyar - avarukku irukkara talentukku naa theeni poda vendaama? so antha alavukku oru 'karu' kadaikkanum. appadi onnu kadaikkum, athukku elaamey music, technicians allamey amayanum. Appadi amanju oru padam pannuvom! 'Nayagan' vida perisa onnu kudukkanum illya?'

so he said with definitively!!and wud it be the film talked about or what!

WOW! Now that would be a movie to watch. I was sooo very disappointed with Mumbai Express (hind version). Pathetically made I thought. I am hoping they messed it up in the translation from Tamil to Hindi. Waiting to get my hands on the Tamil version! I sorely miss the Bay Area when it comes to movies and good food.

When it comes to good cinema, India has to offer the following films only:

Pather Panchali
Do Bheega Zameen

Unfortunately, both were made after being highly motivated with Bicycle Thieves - the all time classic.

Unlike Americans, who came up with Citizen Kane or Japanese with Seven Samurai, Indians have not contributed anything to the world of cinema. Yet, every year they make a huge number of films with very little or no quality
